The UConn Library acquires access to Licensed Electronic Resources to support the research and learning needs of the UConn community. In making use of Licensed Electronic Resources, members of the UConn community are required to comply with the general terms and conditions outlined below.
What Are Licensed Electronic Resources?
“Licensed Electronic Resources” means research databases, e-books, e-journals, and other electronic research and curricular support materials to which the UConn Library executes license agreements for online access by the UConn community.
Persons authorized to use UConn’s Licensed Electronic Resources include UConn faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students. Remote access by these users through a secure login connection established by the University is permitted, with the exception of a small number of resources acquired to support the UConn Health Center or School of Law. Individuals who are not UConn faculty, staff, or students may access most Licensed Electronic Resources through computers or wireless networks at the libraries. For compliance purposes, UConn alumni and other community members are not permitted to access Licensed Electronic Resources away from campus.
Authorized Users may display, download, print, copy, or link to a reasonable portion of each Licensed Electronic Resource for the purposes of research, teaching, and private study. To inquire about additional permitted uses of specific resources, users should contact the Library. This Policy is not designed to supersede fair use law.
Using the Licensed Electronic Resources for commercial purposes is prohibited. Systematic downloading, distributing, or retaining substantial portions of a Licensed Electronic Resource or retrieving information by use of software such as scripts, agents, or robots is prohibited. Users may not remove, obscure, or deface copyright or trademark notices. Users should obtain permission from providers prior to using text or data mining methods on any Licensed Electronic Resource or portion thereof. Other restrictions may apply—contact the Library with any questions or concerns.
Use by University Affiliates
UConn defines “Affiliate” as “an individual who is not working at the University, is not a Student or Faculty member and is not on the University’s payroll.” Affiliates may be associated with the Technology Incubation Program (TIP) or other initiatives. While most of UConn’s Licensed Electronic Resources permit use by Affiliates, some of these resources are licensed for use by UConn faculty, staff, and students only.
Use of the following Licensed Electronic Resources by University Affiliates is strictly prohibited. The following list may not be comprehensive and is subject to change.
- Gartner Interweb
- Mintel Academic GMN – Global Market Navigator
- Mintel GNPD Food and Drink
- Mintel Reports
- RIA Checkpoint (both full and limited versions)
- SciFinder Scholar
- WRDS (Audit Analytics, Compustat, etc.)
Loss of Access
Misuse of Licensed Electronic Resources may lead to suspension or loss of access to the resources for the entire UConn community. Misuse may also lead to suspension of library privileges or even personal liability for the misusing party.
